When Rose Blumkin, a Russian immigrant, opened the Nebraska Furniture Mart in 1937 in the basement of a shop in downtown Omaha, Nebraska, she was on her way toward her American Dream.
Following a simple business philosophy, "Sell cheap and tell the truth," Mrs. Blumkin lead the Nebraska Furniture Mart through more than 65 years of uninterrupted sales growth. After a category 5 tornado in 1975devastated the premises, Mrs. Blumkin and her son, Louie, regrouped and rebuilt the Nebraska Furniture Mart, but bigger and better. In 1994, the Blumkins added a huge electronics and appliance store. In 2000, a remodel of Nebraska Furniture Mart Omaha was completed. In addition, the Homemakers store and Woodmarc Furniture Company in Des Moines, Iowa, became a part of Nebraska Furniture Mart. In 2003, they added an all new warehouse and distribution center as well as a new store in Kansas City, Kansas, is the first location outside Omaha to offer all of Nebraska Furniture Mart’s suite of products. What Makes Nebraska Furniture Mart So Special? Stretching across three states, Nebraska Furniture Mart offers selections of furniture, electronics, appliances, flooring, computers and builder sales. So, whether you are shopping for a corner computer desk, pricing out Sealy mattress sets or want to check out what’s on clearance in furniture and appliances, Nebraska Furniture Mart has a large selection of products for the entire family. In fact, well-known investor Warren Buffett was so impressed with the Blumkins reputation that he closed a deal with Rose on a handshake. This now famous $60 million deal secured Warren Buffett’s 1983 purchase of 90% of the business. So, what is it about, this “sell cheap and tell the truth” that caught even Warren Buffett’s attention? It’s a philosophy that you can provide quality products to consumers at an affordable price that is well below that of the competitions’ and still turn a profit.
