Originally Dixie Furniture Company, Lexington Home Brands was founded in 1901 by a group of Lexington, North Carolina, businessmen. Building their first oak bedroom ensemble on the site where Lexington Home Brands largest furniture plant sits today, Dixie Furniture Company was part of a loose cooperative of local furniture companies who set up shop in an area abundant with wood and fine craftsman.
Battling fires, mergers, acquisitions, wars and the Great Depression, Dixie continued to grow and flourish expanding across downtown Lexington, buying out old factories and building new ones until it eventually occupied 31 acres or nine downtown city blocks. After a visit to Ford’s auto plant in 1940, management at Dixie introduced automatic conveyors and mass production techniques to move furniture from one stage of assembly to the next. In the 1950s and 60s, Dixie separated into four separate companies, each with their own specialty. As each company grew on its own, the sum of its parts was not equal to the whole. In 1987, Michigan-based Masco Corporation bought and merged the four Lexington companies into Lexington Furniture Industries. In 1994, upholstery producer HickoryCraft was blended with Lexington, adding upholstery products to their already growing product lines. In 1996, Lexington, underwent a leveraged buyout; and in 2002, a Lexington Home Brands management group returned the once Dixie Furniture Company back to private ownership. Today Lexington Home Brands has grown considerably from its original two small buildings. As a full-line furniture manufacturer, Lexington produces bedroom, dining room, casual dining, home office, occasional use, home entertainment, youth, upholstered, leather and wicker furniture for domestic and international customers.
